Functional Medicine in Sandpoint, Idaho
Find the Root Cause. Not Just Another Diagnosis.
Have you been told your lab work is “normal” but you still don’t feel well?
Maybe you’re struggling with fatigue, weight gain, hormone imbalance, digestive issues, brain fog, anxiety, chronic pain, autoimmune disease, or inflammation. You’ve seen multiple providers, tried different medications, and still don’t have answers.
At Lake Life Wellness Center, we use Functional Medicine to look deeper. Rather than simply treating symptoms, we work to identify and address the underlying factors contributing to illness so your body can function the way it was designed to.
Functional Medicine is a root-cause, whole-person approach to care. Like naturopathic medicine, our providers consider nutrition, lifestyle, stress, digestion, hormones, environment, and the underlying factors that influence how you feel. We use a detailed intake and, when helpful, lab testing to create a practical plan with clear next steps—rather than offering another temporary fix. Our goal is simple: help you understand why your symptoms developed and create a practical roadmap toward better health.
Is This Right for You?
Functional medicine may be a good fit if you have been told your labs are “normal” but still do not feel well, or if you want a deeper understanding of symptoms such as fatigue, bloating, brain fog, weight changes, hormone shifts, thyroid concerns, or chronic inflammation.
It may also be a good fit if you are ready to make changes and want someone to help you understand what to do, in what order, and why. Rather than handing you a long list of recommendations all at once, we work with you step by step—starting with the changes most likely to make a difference, then building from there.
During your consultation, we take time to review your health history, symptoms, lifestyle, nutrition, stress, sleep, and any previous testing. From there, we create a personalized plan and provide guidance and support as you put it into practice.Functional medicine is a good fit if you prefer a natural, individualized approach and want support with nutrition, lifestyle, supplements, stress, and long-term prevention—not just a quick fix.
Meet Our Providers
Danyel Kush, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC
Functional Medicine Nurse Practitioner
Danyel Kush is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner who is passionate about helping patients uncover the root cause of their health concerns rather than simply managing symptoms. She believes true healing comes from understanding the whole person and creating individualized treatment plans that support the body, mind, and spirit.
She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Liberty University in 2010 before completing her Master of Science in Nursing Education in 2014, where she went on to teach nursing students at a private university in Washington State. In 2018, Danyel received her Master of Science in Nursing from Gonzaga University, graduating with honors as a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She is board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
Danyel has experience in both traditional internal medicine and integrative primary care, giving her a unique perspective that combines evidence-based medicine with a whole-person approach to health. She is currently pursuing certification through the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), further expanding her expertise in identifying and addressing the underlying causes of chronic illness.
At Lake Life Wellness Center, Danyel provides functional medicine consultations for concerns such as hormone imbalance, fatigue, thyroid disorders, digestive health, autoimmune conditions, metabolic health, and chronic inflammation. Her goal is to partner with patients to create sustainable, personalized plans that restore health, improve quality of life, and empower them to take an active role in their wellness journey.
Outside of the clinic, Danyel enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and walking her French Mastiffs.
Jamie Davis, MA, MSA, DAOM, LAc.
Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
Dr. Jamie Davis is the owner of Lake Life Wellness Center and has been helping patients navigate complex health conditions for more than 20 years.
Her journey into healthcare began with a deep fascination for understanding why people become ill and how culture, environment, lifestyle, and biology shape health. She earned a Master’s Degree in Medical Anthropology in 2005, followed by a Master’s Degree in Acupuncture in 2008 and a Clinical Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in 2015.
Dr. Davis has completed advanced clinical training in the United States, Taiwan, and China, including a hospital internship in Shanghai where she studied the treatment of neurological, endocrine, and internal medicine conditions. She is also a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner through the School of Applied Functional Medicine, completing an intensive three-year post-doctoral training program focused on uncovering and addressing the root causes of chronic disease.
Throughout her career, Dr. Davis has worked with patients struggling with digestive disorders, hormone imbalances, autoimmune disease, chronic pain, fatigue, anxiety, insomnia, metabolic dysfunction, and complex chronic illnesses. Her approach combines the wisdom of traditional healing systems with modern functional medicine, nutritional science, and evidence-informed clinical practice.
What sets Dr. Davis apart is her ability to look beyond a diagnosis. Rather than asking, “What medication matches this symptom?” she asks, “Why is this happening in the first place?” Her goal is to help patients understand the underlying factors contributing to illness and create practical, personalized plans that support long-term health and resilience.
When she’s not in the clinic, Dr. Davis enjoys teaching community workshops, mentoring practitioners, spending time with her family, exploring the outdoors of North Idaho, and continuing her lifelong pursuit of learning about health, healing, and human potential.
What Makes Our Clinic Different?
Unlike a clinic that offers functional medicine alone, Lake Life can combine functional medicine with acupuncture, Chinese medicine, nutrition, lifestyle support, herbal medicine, stress management, and targeted supplementation under one roof. This lets us address both the underlying causes of your symptoms and the day-to-day ways they affect your life.
Our providers also bring a unique combination of training and experience. Dr. Jamie Davis is a licensed acupuncturist, doctor of Chinese medicine, and certified functional medicine practitioner with more than 17 years of clinical experience. Her background bridges Chinese medicine, acupuncture, herbal medicine, lifestyle education, and functional medicine.
Danyel Kush is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with experience in both conventional internal medicine and integrative primary care. She is pursuing certification through the Institute for Functional Medicine and brings a strong foundation in evidence-based care, lab interpretation, and whole-person treatment planning.
Together, they offer functional medicine care that is both clinically grounded and rooted in a natural, whole-person approach.
Functional Laboratory Testing
Many chronic health conditions develop long before they appear on standard medical testing.
When appropriate, we may recommend advanced laboratory testing to help evaluate:
- Blood Sugar Regulation
- Hormone Balance
- Thyroid Function
- Nutrient Deficiencies
- Gut Health and Microbiome Balance (GI Map)
- Digestive Function
- Inflammation
- Food Sensitivities
Testing is never required. Recommendations are based on your symptoms, goals, and budget.

Follow-Up Care
Healing takes time, and lasting change happens in steps. Putting all the pieces together—identifying root causes, making sustainable nutrition and lifestyle changes, and adjusting supplements or other recommendations—usually takes 3–6 months. For people with more complex or long-standing health concerns, especially those with multiple conditions, meaningful progress may take closer to a year.
Follow-up visits, usually every 4–6 weeks, allow us to review your progress, adjust your plan, and build on what is working. Rather than changing everything at once, we focus first on the changes most likely to make a difference, then add nutrition, lifestyle, supplement, and stress-support recommendations over time.
If you have already had your first visit and want to schedule a follow-up, book HERE.
Functional Medicine Workshops
To enhance your care, we recommend that you attend
our functional medicine workshop series. Each class dives deep into all aspects of your health (mental health, gut health, nutrition, hormones), and group class settings are very effective at helping the information to sink in and to help you feel empowered in your health journey.

Please note that insurance does not cover functional medicine services. Our provider can order additional lab work if necessary, but this is not a covered service through insurance and would be out of pocket. We use Rupa Healthcare lab services, which provides lab processing at very reasonable rates that are often less money out of pocket than insurance fees or even copays. Lab work is always an optional service and we can assess your health and treatment strategy without them if cost is prohibitive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does insurance cover Functional Medicine?
No. Functional Medicine consultations are self-pay. However, our clinic is eligible for HSA, so you can use your health savings account for any service. Acupuncture services may be covered by insurance, call our office to verify.
Do I need lab testing?
No. Many patients begin with nutrition and lifestyle changes alone. Testing is recommended only when it is likely to provide useful information.
How many visits will I need?
Every patient is different. Some concerns improve within a few months, while more complex chronic conditions often require longer-term support.
Can Functional Medicine be combined with Acupuncture?
Absolutely. Many patients experience the best results when Functional Medicine and Acupuncture are used together.
Do you see patients outside of Sandpoint?
Yes. We offer telehealth services to those unable to come into the Center. In addition, patients travel to our clinic from throughout Sandpoint, Ponderay, Sagle, Dover, Hope, Clark Fork, Priest River, Coeur d’Alene, Eastern Washington, and Western Montana.
